Necessary Skills For A Good Basketball Coach
Thousands of children and youth around the world spend hours every week playing basketball, in school gymnasiums and on street basketball courts. There are thousands of incredibly talented basketball players around the world that will never turn into excellent basketball players for a simple reason they lack good basketball coaching. In order to be a good coach, there are a few skills that are valuable and important for any coach to have. Some of them can be learned, and some of them are simply instinctive, but all of them are necessary in order to be a good coach.
1) A skill that is vital for any good coach is adaptability. The best basketball plays are only good until the other team hits the court, and then everything is changed. A good coach is able to read the situation on the court and assess his options quickly. Once he has decided the course of action, the good coach is able to change his original strategy in order to be compatible with the reality of what is happening on the court. Many coaches try to force the players to conform to their strategy or the plays in their basketball playbook, but a good coach is willing to adapt his tactics in order to conform to the game being played.
2: Making quick and decisive choices is another quality of a good coach. When a coach knows the need to change strategy he will without a doubt. The statement "he who hesitates is lost" stands true with coaching decisions, because coaches cannot hesitate when instant decisions need to be made.
3. If you are going to be a coach and coach a team well, you must love, or at least like your team. Why bother with a team if you don't even like the team members? A good coach knows that all, the training he gives to the team is only preparation for the real deal, no matter how many drills are run through. Giving their players what is best for them, loving them, and accepting when they fail are the signs of a good coach.
4) A realistic outlook on the flaws of the players is an important part of being a coach. Every human is prone to flaws and failings, and no player will ever be perfect. A great coach will recognize the weaknesses in himself, and understand that these players also have weaknesses of their own.
5) A good coach forgives the mistakes of his players, and trusts them to do the right thing at the next opportunity. Even when the perfect basketball plays are screwed up, the coach will ignore the mistake and give the player an opportunity to prove himself again. "After all," a good coach will tell himself, "the basketball playbook is filled with many more opportunities for the player to do the right thing."
6. A good coach will never give up on a player just because at first glance he may not appear to have skills. The coach is determined to grow those skills, and that is what basketball drills are for. Most players are strong in one area and weaker in others, so by doing drills, the coach allows the players to improves themselves and their skills.
